The Château de la Beaume is located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the wild gorges of Haut-Allier with a view of the peaks of Saint Jean-Lachalm and Gévaudan. “By taking the road to Grandrieux, we can follow the entire high chain of Margeride, to return via Langeac; but it is even better to follow the shores of the Allier to Alleyras or Vabres, to get to the Château de La Beaume, sitting on volcanic soil. It is the Château de la Beaume, Alleyras, the only place beyond the Allier, in the district of Le Puy, where the lava flows have spread the most. (excerpt from "Overview of the geology and agriculture of the Haute Loire department" by Alphonse Aulagnier). The Château de la Baume is mentioned for the first time in 1301, during an exchange between Aldebert de Peyre and Béraud de Mercoeur. It passes soon after to the Freycenet family who also owned Sinzelles.
On May 17, 1545, Charlotte de Sinzelles, "the Lady of Baume", married Jean d'Apchier, commander for the king in Gévaudan. The emblazoned keystone of the small room on the ground floor called "des Chartres" probably marks this union.
In 1559, he left the castle of Vabres which was also in his possession and became lord of Beaume.
Jacques II d'Apchier, their son was besieged at La Beaume in 1579 by the bloodthirsty Captain Mathieu Merle and his "English" who took its occupants prisoner and partially burned the castle.
Since then, the castle is still in the family. It was transmitted by women and to this day is owned by the Payen de La Garanderie family.
This massive construction with a medieval silhouette, rebuilt in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, consists of two main buildings at right angles east-south, flanked on the south-west corner by a round tower.
Inside, there are authentic decorations from the 18th, 2002th and XNUMXth centuries, characterizing the noble residences of Velay: coatings, woodwork, painted decorations and frescoes forming a complete and varied ensemble. The Château de la Beaume has been listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since November XNUMX, XNUMX.
