Noire du Velay is the name of the breed of this black sheep. The volcanic brown soils are not unrelated to the good conformation of the subjects and the color of their fleece.

Lambs brown like volcanic soil.'

Whether white or black, Haute-Loire lamb has not seen all the colors! The characteristic of our lambs are first of all two breeds: Blanche du Massif Central and Noire du Velay.

Two so-called “rustic” breeds, well adapted to our mountains. Black from Velay it is the name of the breed of our black sheep. Its remarkable fleece merges with the brown hues of the volcanic lands. The White of the Massif Central, it is that of the Saugues market on the mountain of Margeride at the gates of Gévaudan. It is also a fattening exclusively in the sheepfold. The lambs suckle their mother and receive a cereal-based feed in addition to the milk. These are young lambs, 3 months on average, which gives a subtle taste to the meat.

Velay black lamb

The black sheep established itself a long time ago as an independent breed on the plateaus of Velay.
The Noire du Velay is recognized for its ability to adapt, its lambing in all seasons and its exemplary maternal behavior.
The "pastre" is the shepherd, the guardian of the flock.

And on the plate...
