Meet just 1 hour from Lyon and 45 minutes from Saint-Etienne, in Bas-en-Basset. We sink into the forest, when suddenly, rises between the trees, the impressive castle of Rochebaron, among the first castles of the Loire. A valuable witness to the defensive architecture of the Middle Ages, but also the site of an incredible spectacle of birds of prey!

A falconry show at the service of historical heritage

Nicolas is a passionate falconer and every year, at the Château de Rochebaron, he invites the public to discover this historic Altiligerian site in a different way…: through a demonstration of birds in free flight. Beautiful and impressive raptors.

In his open-air theater with a bird's-eye view of the Gorges de la Loire, there is something fascinating about Nicolas, as he masters his 11 species of birds of prey like no one else. Moreover, eagles, owls and buzzards skim our heads with disconcerting precision. The speed at which they move, their wingspans: everything is striking. The moment is suspended, out of time...

In addition, each flight is accompanied by educational comments from Nicolas, who then even invites children who wish to carry the birds of prey and pet them. For sure, the little budding trainers are not ready to forget this privileged moment of proximity with these fascinating birds.

Internships and birthdays among birds of prey

The Château de Rochebaron invites you to discover the fascinating world of birds of prey during an individual course during which Nicolas opens the doors of his majestic flight to adults and children from 10 years old.
On the program: a moment of familiarization with the animals, the discovery of the falconer's equipment and its use, the practice of raptor recall and a walk with the birds.

It's your birthday and you're between 6 and 11 years old? What luck ! Come and celebrate it in an unusual place: at the Château de Rochebaron. For the occasion, 3 formulas are available to you: a treasure hunt; a falconry mini-course and a bird of prey show; or a scavenger hunt and a bird of prey show. The snack is included!

The castle of Rochebaron, vestige of a witness of the Middle Ages

A pure moment of wonder in an unusual setting! Since the castle, too, is worth the detour. Despite its ruins, the medieval building remains charismatic. Two museums as well as a course of 12 explanatory panels in the castle guide visitors in the footsteps of the lords of Rochebaron, who occupied the premises from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century. And the panorama is even more impressive from the top of the keep of the historic monument!

An idea for the children: take part in the treasure hunt game by attacking the castle. Under the gaze of the turrets, we scan every corner in search of the gold coins hidden on the site. Then, as if to celebrate your victory, you climb to the top of the majestic keep to enjoy the even more dizzying view.

Access to the castle is via a footpath. Plan a 20 to 25 minute walk. Remember to equip yourself with good shoes and take water in summer. A small bar offers drinks at the castle. The path is paved on 3/4 and allows access to strollers.

The Château de Rochebaron is open every day in the summer and during school holidays.

Open. Closes at 18:00 p.m.
