Saint-Pal-de-Chalencon is an old fortified town which belonged to the territory of the lords of the Monts du Forez. It was then attached to Velay during the Revolution. This old medieval city is rich in its heritage with its castle, its listed gates and its XNUMXth century church.

Standing on a rocky escarpment, Saint-Pal-de-Chalençon has in fact retained its medieval charms: a primitive castle or rather a fortified house, its XNUMXth century church, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette…

The castle and its enclosure dating from the XNUMXth century were a defense system. It was built on behalf of the Bishop of Rodez at the end of the XNUMXth century before passing into the hands of the Polignacs at the end of the XNUMXth century.

The early church, smaller than today, was itself integrated into this defense system: protected by the castle, it contributed to its protection.
