Tour Clementine
The Clémentine Tower located at the apse of the church dominates it from all its height. It was built at the end of the XNUMXth century to house the many treasures of the Benedictine abbey. No interior visits currently.
A real fortified dungeon, the monks took refuge there when the abbey was invaded and ransacked by the Huguenots in 1562 and were able to resist for several days thanks to the well and the oven fitted out in what has now become the church's sacristy.
The only Gothic buttress present at La Chaise-Dieu supports the tower on the south side.
It is not possible to visit the interior of this site but you can admire its silhouette by visiting the town…
