Mont Bar, which dominates the Velay from its 1 meters, is a Strombolian-type volcano in the Devès range. Its age has been estimated at 175 years. Its crater contains a peat bog, a unique case in France and perhaps in Europe, “a flat acidophilic bog” where sphagnum, filiform sedges grow… A superb beech forest covers its sides.

As for the fauna, several species of dragonflies, reptiles, mountain forest birds have been identified...
