Rebuilt in 1819 and 1827, discover this majestic church dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Inside it conceals remarkable treasures such as great master paintings, most of which are classified as “historical monuments”.
Among them we find The wedding at Cana by Jean Cotelle, Christ before Caipha by Gérard Honthorst, The descent from the cross by Debouloz, or the painting by Raymond Balze, Christ soothing the storm.
The latter was painted between 1846 and 1849. In fact this painting is only a sketch. The final version features more accurately treated characters in a shades of gray, and the position of the rudder is also different.
Unlike other known paintings by Balze on this theme, the sketch does not include Latin inscriptions on the top of the shell. According to the Rouillac study, the theme of Jesus calming the storm is dear to the artist who exhibited the subject five times at the Salons of 1849 (n°57), 1873 (n°54), 1882 (drawing n°2760), 1890 (pastel n°2533) and 1895 (n°98). Under the protection of Christ, the sketch presents Saint Peter to his right looking into the distance, while three other apostles turn to Christ in fear, praying or admiring him. In the background, a man holds the ropes of the sails of the boat. In 1849, Auguste Galimard expressed his admiration for the treatment of the subject, the representation of which is difficult, and praised Raymond Balze for having been able to paint both the storm and the calm, these two contrasts forming the subject. For him, this painting was one of the best in the Salon and Raymond Balze a promising artist.
