The art of lace from Puy-en-Velay and Brivadois

Since the XNUMXth century, Haute-Loire is one of the historic centers for the creation and production of bobbin lace, one of the manufacturing techniques. Handmade, this lace is a traditional know-how that can still be found in the shops of the Puy-en-Velay, especially on the route leading to the Cathedral of Le Puy.

But there are several lace centers in Haute-Loire, each with their specificities. Whether le Velay seems to be for some the cradle of bobbin lace, which consists of weaving and braiding threads, manually to make fine pieces such as handkerchiefs, doilies, curtains or nuns' albs... Haute-Loire now has at least two other lace centers: Returnnac and his Museum of Lace Manufactures and Brioude and its lace Polychrome Cluny.

Many establishments perpetuate the tradition and pass on this know-how

  • THEHotel de la Dentelle à Brioude exhibits its most beautiful collections of old lace and its polychrome contemporary creations.
