Le Chemin de Stevenson. Le Puy-en-Velay – Chasserades

Program

This adventure through the Cévennes lasted 12 days for STEVENSON and Modestine his donkey. The hike that we suggest starts in Chasseradès and ends in Saint Jean du Gard, for a duration of 6 days of walking.
PROGRAM

8 days, 7 nights and 6 days of hiking.

DAY 1: LE PUY EN VELAY 625m
Arrival at the hotel in the late afternoon, dinner and overnight. For those who come by car, it is possible to leave your vehicle in the underground car park.

DAY 2: LE PUY EN VELAY – LE MONASTIER SUR GAZEILLE 930 m
First stage which leads to Monastier, from where R. L Stevenson left in September 1878 for 220 km with
his donkey Modestine. We leave Puy en Velay in a southerly direction (superb views of the Puy basin) towards Coubon, where we will cross the Loire before reaching the town of Monastier.
Stage of 19 km, about 5 to 6 hours of walking

DAY 3: LE MONASTIER – LE BOUCHET ST NICOLAS 1220 m
This stage descends into the Gazeille valley, then into the Loire valley as far as Goudet (785m) passing through Courmarcès (975m), and St Martin de Fugères (1000m). Pretty views over these valleys, then through small hamlets, pastures and crops, arrival at Bouchet St Nicolas (old house on the edge of the road with stones decorated with bas reliefs).
Stage of 24 km, about 5 to 6 hours of walking
For groups in the event of an accommodation problem, a transfer can be organized to St Haon.

DAY 4: LE BOUCHET ST NICOLAS – LANGOGNE 920 m
After continuing on a wide path and crossing the Allier, you enter Gévaudan, in Langogne. Here you will have the opportunity to admire the hundred or so capitals housed in a Romanesque church in the Burgundian style. That
the latter is surrounded by a small city, itself protected by ramparts and five restored towers.
Stage of 27 km, about 5h30 of walking

DAY 5: LANGOGNE – CHEYLARD L’EVEQUE 1125 m
RL Stevenson then entered the land of Gévaudan, a harsh country of moors and swamps covered with heather, small groves, birches and granite rocks: passing through St Flour de Mercoire (1049 m), then arriving at the very small village of Cheylard l'Eveque.
Stage of 16 km, about 4 hours of walking
Possibility also to stop at Chaudeyrac, which will be 16 km.

DAY 6: CHEYLARD L'EVEQUE – LA BASTIDE PUYLAURENT 1024 m
At the exit of Cheylard, through the national forest of Gardille, follow the direction of Luc (971 m) where the ruins of the castle remain, former guardian of the Chemin de Régordane (pilgrimage route of Saint Gilles). Then go to Rogleton (990m), then to “Notre Dame des Neiges”: Abbey (Stevenson spent three days there!) where Cistercian monks live who produce wine (except GR at 8 km), before heading to La Bastide .
Stage of 26.5 km by taking the variant of the GR 70, about 6 hours of walking
If you stop at Chaudeyrac, it will be 30,5 km, still taking the GR 70 variant.
Possibility of reducing this step, contact us.

DAY 7: LA BASTIDE PUYLAURENT – CHASSERADES 1150 m
Relatively short stage, still through this beautiful national forest of Gardille, climb to the summit of Mourade (1308 m): view of the plateau, then descent to Chabalier and Chasserades.
Stage of 12 km, about 3 hours of walking

DAY 8: HUNTING
