The French Hiking Federation is organizing a great event to celebrate the 2024 Olympic Games: the Grande Randonnée to Paris, from March 16 to 26 on the Altiligère part. Sign up to become a hiker ambassador and reach Paris by calf strength or simply on a stage. An unforgettable experience !

Regarding the crossing of the Haute-Loire, the departure is announced, at the gates of the department, at Mont-Gerbier-de-Jonc on March 16 for an arrival in Saint-Etienne on March 26 by borrowing in particular the GR® 3-Source trails and Loire gorges. A unique initiative which will bring together walkers from all over France from 16 metropolitan cities or emblematic places through 7 main routes which all converge towards the capital: Paris. At the national level, the event takes place from Saturday January 13 to Sunday May 12.

Each walker has their own formula!

And everyone has the opportunity to participate in their own way! By walking freely, in complete autonomy on the different stages, on a few stages, or over a few kilometers, or even by just coming to participate in the activities planned at the end of the day in various municipalities in the Department...: Arlempdes, Chadron, Le Puy-en- Velay, Vorey, Retournac, Bas-en-Basset and Aurec-sur-Loire.

In Haute-Loire, departure is planned from Mont Gerbier -de-Jonc on Saturday March 16, then is divided into 11 steps: to Saint-Etienne, each with their own set of animations.

Walking and sustainable mobility

Four stages allow you to reach Le Puy-en-Velay by train after the walking stage (but be careful, they are not the easiest):

  • Le Puy-en-Velay – Vorey = 26 km and 736 D+
  • Vorey – Retournac = 22 km and 783 D+
  • Retournac – Bas-en-Basset = 24 km and 684 D+
  • Bas-en-Basset – Aurec-sur-Loire = 18 km and 375 D+
  • Step 1. Mont-Gerbier de Jonc / Lake Issarlès: 21 km; 405 D+; exhibition in the village hall
  • Step 2. Lake Issarlès / Arlempdes: 18,3 km; 665 D+; guided tour of Arlempdes castle
  • Step 3. Arlempdes / Chadron: 24,5 km; 665 D+; conference on the upper Loire valley by SOS Loire Vivante
  • Step 4. Chadron / Le Puy-en-Velay: 16 km 404 D+

Focus on the “rest” day of March 20

Step 5 : day of activities on March 20 in Puy-en-Velay organized by the Hiking Committee and numerous partners.
Opening of a “Hiking Village” on Place du Breuil from 9:30 a.m. to 17 p.m. with the presence of Tourist Offices from all the areas crossed by the GR® 3-source and gorges of the Loire (Mézenc Loire Meygal, Cayres Pradelles, Agglo du Puy-en-Velay, Destination Gorges de la Loire) in order to discover the practice of hiking in Haute-Loire, in all its forms.

  • Step 7. Vorey / Retournac: 22,1 km; 781 D+; visit to the Lace Manufactures Museum
  • Step 8. Retournac / Bas-en-Basset: 24,5 km; 684 D+; presentation of the castle and the eagles of Rochebaron
  • Step 9. Bas-en-Basset / Aurec-sur-Loire: 18 km; 684 D+; visit to the digital castle of Aurec
  • Step 10. Aurec-sur-Loire / Saint-Victor-sur-Loire: 14,5 km; 286 D+
  • Step 11. Saint-Victor-sur-Loire / Saint-Etienne: 16,3 km; 375 D+

900 km from the sources of the Loire to the Seine

The most courageous will continue towards the capital, crossing Lyon and the Forez mountains, but also the Morvan, the Yonne in Auxerre and finally following the course of the Seine to Paris. Either 900 km of roaming at the heart of the natural and cultural wealth of France. Enough to combine sport, nature and sharing for an unforgettable experience.
