Le Puy-en-Velay is one of the four starting points to Santiago de Compostela. This European Cultural Route covers 134 km in Haute-Loire, spread out before and after Le Puy-en-Velay. The GR®65 from Le Puy, known as the “Via Podiensis” is one of the most famous routes on the Camino de Santiago. The departure from Puy-en-Velay allows you to stroll in the heart of this beautiful city whose cathedral and Hôtel-Dieu have been listed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
We join the first stage in Saint-Privat-d'Allier, then cross the Margeride to Saugues, former stronghold of the Lords of Mercoeur, to finish at the Domaine du Sauvage in Chanaleilles which was the seat of a large seigneury of Auvergne. We then continue the stage to Aumont-Aubrac in Lozère. Along the way, lodges, tables d'hôtes, hotels and campsites welcome pilgrims and hikers for a good night's sleep.
The stages of the "Saint-Jacques" in Haute-Loire are among the most astonishing, which constitutes an excellent invitation to embark on this mythical route listed as a UNESCO heritage site.
The bravest can also start the GR®65 in Geneva, or from Cluny Abbey and thus take other variants that lead to Puy-en-Velay.
